The company was founded in 2014 by MIT graduates in Redwood City, CA. In 2018, Skydio introduced the R1 drone to consumers which was recognized as the world’s first fully autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle. It had multiple onboard cameras and could fly and avoid obstacles on its own. In 2019, the company launched the Skydio 2 drone, priced at more than half of the R1’s price and boasting improved autonomous tracking and video capabilities. The company's flagship product, the X2, is equipped with seven cameras, 100x zoom, and night vision.
Skydio’s unique technologies have enabled several companies using its drones to obtain waivers for conducting BVLOS operations.
